Upcoming Events At Hyde Park Free Library
Folk Music Concerts at the Hyde Park Free Library
SINGER SLOAN WAINWRIGHT TO APPEAR
Renowned regional singer-songwriter Sloan Wainwright, will be offering a vocal workshop and an evening concert here at the Hyde Park Free Library on February 12.
The workshop will be held from 1-4 PM at the S. June Keyes Memorial Annex at 4 Main St. The concert will take place at 8:00 PM that evening, also at the Annex Building.
Those wishing to take part in the vocal workshop need to register in advance. Advance reservations for the concert are strongly urged since the Annex Building has limited seating. Registrants for the workshop will receive a ticket for the evening performance as part of their package. Prices are $35.00 for the workshop or $8.00 for the concert alone.
Reservations for both the workshop and the concert can be made via email to HPFLConcerts@aol.com. Anyone wishing to make a reservation for the concert only may also call the library at (845) 229-7791.
Sloan's webpage refers to her "an independent artist making grown-up girl music in the truest sense - a rare, one of a kind voice that speaks deeply to our humanity and leaves us forever changed." Anyone who has seen Sloan perform live will attest to that statement.
This concert will be the first in a series sponsored by the library and organized by regional folk singer (and Hyde Park native) Eric Garrison. A previously scheduled concert featuring Michigan based singer-songwriter Annie Gallup had to be canceled due to inclement weather. We're looking forward, however, to the upcoming concerts in the series, which will include Kate McDonnell on March 5; Scott Petito and Leslie Ritter on April 9; and Eric Garrison on May 7.
FREE CONCERT WITH CLASSICAL GUITARIST PETER FLETCHERÝ FEB. 26
We are pleased to announce a free concert with classical guitarist and recording artist Peter Fletcher on Saturday, February 26 at 2:00 PM in the Library Annex. Mr. Fletcher is 1990 prize winner of the MTNA Wurlitzer Competion, and has performed in the Christopher Parkening Master Class, in which he was chosen to play in the student recital for two consecutive years. He has also studied in Master Classes with Jose Tomas, David Leisner, David Russel, Oscar Ghiglila and Ben Verdery, as well as with Nicholas Goluses at the Eastman School of Music, where he was twice recipient of an Eastman Graduate Award. He now holds a Mast of Music Degree from that school.
His first record was the acclaimed CD The Art of the Guitar. His most recent work Federico Mompou: Suite Compostelana; Canciones y danzas has been released on the Centaur label. He has explored the works of Bach, Rodrigo, Granados, Albeniz, Ponce, Villa-Lobos, Grieg, Torroba and several other masters. He also studies the work of masters of other instruments and has benefited greatly from his study of singers in particular.
This concert will be sponsored in part through funding from The Friends of the Hyde Park Free Library and through grants from the Mid-Hudson Library System.
BOOK NOOK OPENS / VALENTINE'S WEEKEND BOOKSALE
We're delighted to be able to announce the opening of our new "Book Nook" in our Library Annex. The book nook features gently used books available for nominal donations.
The Book Nook is staffed by volunteers on Saturday mornings, Monday afternoon and Friday afternoon. Additional hours of operation may be added as more volunteers take on shifts.
The library will still run its traditional "special event" booksales on Community Day and on Independence Day weekend. But the Nook will give our browsers even more opportunity to pick up some great reading at bargain rates.
One traditional sale that we will be observing will take place on Valentine's Day Weekend (Feb. 12 and 13). This will be held in the main section of the Library Annex , but the books in the Book Nook will also be available for review and sale. We're hoping that this will be a good introduction to the ongoing offerings at the Book Nook.
DEFENSIVE DRIVING/POINT REDUCTTION CLASS OFFERED
We've had a great response to the Defensive Driving and Point Reduction courses that we've offered here at HPFL , so much so that we will offer another one in February. The course will run on Wednesday, February 9 and Thursday, February 10 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Attendance at both sessions is mandatory. The course is offered through the Empire Safety Council and is DMV NYS approved.
To register call (845) 895-5098 or go to www.digitaldefensivedriving.com
FIBROMYALGIA WORKSHOP
We've run a number of sessions with acupuncturist, Detlef Wolf of the Center for Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs. He will be offering another program in the series on February 8 at 7:00 PM in the library. This session will address the problem of fibromyalgia and how acupuncture may benefit sufferers of that syndrome.
With any health related workshop, we always note that such programs are offered for informational purposes and that the library itself cannot and does not support any particular treatment option or program. We do think that many will find this discussion of interest, however, and hope that its presentation will be beneficial to all. Pre-registration is not required for this event.
