"Resistance, Courage and Resilience"
The Stories of Three Women In Auschwitz
2005 marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The library is honored to be able to offer a special program to commemorate that event on Saturday, March 19 at 2:00 PM. Hyde Park resident Erich Lerch, himself a survivor of the Holocaust, will present a talk on the lives of three remarkable women who were interned at Auschwitz during World War II. Writers Charlotte Delbo ("To Auschwitz and Back," "The Treasury of Our Days") and Sara Nomberg-Przytyk ("Samson's Column," "Auschwitz: True Tales of a Grotesque Land.") will be focused on, as well as the remarkable story of Dr. Adelaide Hautval, a French physician, who bravely refused to participate in medical experiments carried out on prisoners.
The program will be held in the Library Annex. After the talk, there will be a question and answer period. Advanced registration is recommended. Please call 229-7791 for further information. |

Concert Series to Continue
The Living Room Concert Series in our newly refurbished annex building has been a great success, and we are pleased to announce two more concerts scheduled for the upcoming months. As of this writing, we have already hosted well attended concerts by regionally based artists such as Sloan Wainwright. We also will have hosted another Upstate artist, Kate McDonnell, by the time this article appears. These are recording artists who enjoy national (and international) acclaim--and it is a genuine honor to be able to host them here in Hyde Park.
The program room in the S. June Keyes Library Annex Building is indeed a wonderfully intimate setting for an acoustic concert. The "Living Room" concerts actually take place in a renovated, combined living room/dining room area of this 1835 house. With its two original fireplaces and original pine floors, it exudes a rustic charm absent from most contemporary concert venues.
Our April concert will feature celebrated regional artists Leslie Ritter and Scott Pettito. It will be held on April 9 at 8:00 PM. Admission will be $8.00. Tentatively, a songwriting workshop is being considered (along with a possible one on CD production techniques) for that afternoon. Enrollment in one of these sessions would include a ticket to the evening performance.
Those wishing to just attend the concert are encouraged to make an advance reservation, which can be done by calling the library at 229-7791 or by emailing the promoter at HPFLconcerts@aol.com. Anyone wishing to reserve a spot for one of the workshops should do so by making inquiries via the email address given.
Our May concert will feature Hyde Park resident Eric Garrison and will be held on May 7, also at 8:00 PM. A workshop on that day is also being considered and inquiries should be referred to HPFLconcerts@aol.com.
Updates and possible changes will be posted on our library website at www.hydeparklibrary.org. |

Workshop "Seven Secrets to Successful Weight Loss" with Life Coach Denise Lewis
With summer right around the corner, it's not too early to start thinking about getting ready for swimsuit season. And of course, it's always appropriate to consider improvements to our diet and exercise regimes. On March 31 at 7:00 PM, we will be offering a workshop on successful weight loss techniques with noted Life Coach Denise Lewis of New You Coaching.
Denise is a certified nutrition, lifestyle and weight management specialist. Her program will address overall fitness and nutrition issues, including such concerns as portion management, "good carbs vs. bad carbs" and "good fats vs. bad fats." . She authors a monthly newsletter and has been featured prominently in local media, including an extensive article in the Poughkeepsie Journal.
There is no charge for this workshop, but seating is likely to be limited. Advance registration for this event is strongly recommended. Please call the library at 229-7791 or email us at hyplib@yahoo.com.

Book Nook News
We're delighted to see more and more people visiting our annex and taking advantage of our ongoing offering of gently used books for a small donation. As mentioned in our previous column, we do not have an absolutely fixed schedule for the Nook at this time, but will hopefully be establishing one soon. Much depends on the availability of volunteers to staff the facility. We have typically been running hours on Saturday mornings and most weekday afternoons, but we suggest that all interested patrons check the weekly schedule at the circulation desk and posted elsewhere in the two buildings. |

News From the Children's Room
In addition to our three regular daytime story hours on Mondays and Tuesdays of each from September to June, Mrs. B. has also been offering a monthly evening story time for school age children. This month's event will be held on March 15 at 6:30 PM and will focus on a "Spring Fling" theme--with a bit of St. Paddy's Day lore tossed in for good measure. A craft session will also be offered after the story hour. |

Book Club News
