Upcoming Events At Hyde Park Free Library

Free Holiday Concert Featuring the Beckers

Hyde Park musical favorites Kevin and Carol Becker will be on hand at the Library Annex on December 10 at 2:00 PM for a holiday concert which will feature a musical rendition of "The Night Before Christmas," along with other holiday favorites. This is musical event for the whole family. Admission is
free.

Holiday Open House

The Annex will also be the site of our annual holiday open house. Everyone is invited to stop by the annex on December 13th to enjoy holiday goodies, many baked by our staff and volunteers. It'sİour way of saying thank you to the community--and a great opportunity to see the current art exhibit (featuring the works of Tatiana and Peter Rhinevault), to check out our used book shop "The Book Nook," and (if you haven't already) to see the changes in the building itself.

The open house will run the entire day, (from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM).

Evening Story Hour

Also on the 13th of this month, Mrs. B. will be hosting her monthly Evening Story Hour at 6:30 PM. This month will focus on holiday tales and holiday themed crafts. Our evening story hours are ideal for younger school aged children, but it's always a wonderful event for the entire family.

And do stop by the annex that evening as well for some holiday cheerfulness.

Art Exhibit Continues Through December

As mentioned above, we have an ongoing art exhibit featuring the works of our neighbors Tatiana and Peter Rhinevault. This intergenerational exhibit has been garnering a lot of favorable attention--and deservedly so. Tatiana is an accomplished painter who has had individual paintings on display here in the past. We are delighted to finally be able to host a full-fledged exhibit featuring an array of her works. And young Peter's contributions are remarkable examples of youthful creativity.

And Also In the Children's Room

On Friday, December 16, there will be a special craft session at 4:00 PM. Students from grades 1 and up are invited to drop by and build their very own "Ginger Bread House." This is one event where pre-registration is required, since we need to know how many participants to prepare for. Register by stopping by the library or giving us a call at 229-7791.

During the winter vacation, we will have a special "Winter Break Story Hour" for ages three and up. This special story time will be held on Tuesday, December 27 at 10:30 AM.

And are chess playing kids will be glad to know that we have a "Winter Break Chess" session scheduled for them on December 28th at 1:00 PM. These sessions have proven to be extremely popular during the summer, and we hope to see many of our regulars--and perhaps some new faces--at this winter time session.

Teen Book Club To Start (And A Congratulations to "Battle of the Books" Winners)

The entire community of Hyde Park has reason to be proud of its young readers. The recent "Battle of the Books" contest sponsored by the Mid-Hudson Library System saw Hyde Park and Staatsburg tied for first place. Our participants had to answer tough questions on a series of assigned books. And they performed brilliantly. Congratulations to all the participants from the Town of Hyde Park.

And many thanks to volunteers Pat and Bill Joel who aided Mrs. B. in implementing this program and helping to ensure its success.

As an outgrowth of this program, we have recently begun a Teen Book Club, to be facilitated by Pat Joel. This club is for all interested readers of 'young adult' literature. Our first selection--a very timely one, considering the upcoming release of the film version--will be C.S. Lewis' classic "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe."
