Living Room Concert

We won't be beginning our actual "Living Room Concert" series until October 7 when well known singer-songwriter Cosy Sheridan will make her first appearance here.

And we will also be running a separate series of regional acts each month. Our new River Songs series commences on Oct. 21 with Ken and Julie.

So mark your calendars and tie a string around your finger.

But we don't have to wait till October for a special musical evening here at the Library Annex. Even though it's past Labor Day, it is still officially summer, so we're going to keep wearing white (or whatever other color we damn well feel like) and will keep our summer music series going through September.

The frost isn't on the pumpkin yet (and what with global warming and all, who knows when it will be?)

So our last special, ahem, extended summer concert will be with the New Paltz based Bernstein Bard Trio. I've been enjoying their diverse, (mostly) instrumental CD for the past several weeks and I am certain that this show is going to be a good'un.

Here's some of the basics on the Trio, as reported on their own website www.bernsteinbardtrio.com.

The group, Steve Bernstein (mandolin), Mark Bernstein (guitar), and Robert Bard (bass) is a sound to experience. Deep...rich...shimmering, their music speaks to the ear of the heart. The romance of tango, the lilt of mazurka, the elegance of swing, the many shades of waltz...a cool bossa nova, a fiery samba, the passion of the blues-this trio can swing, rock, bop and stop on a dime!....

Unrestrained by boundaries of style, The Bernstein-Bard Trio crafts every piece into something uniquely original and beautiful. Whether performing standards by Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Django Reinhart, George Gershwin... Latin or Tango by Jobim, Bonfa, Bizet...; traditional and popular melodies from around the world; the music of John Lennon, Sting, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, David Grisman, Jerry Garcia..; their own original compositions...BB Trio interpret it all with style and grace.

From "Bernstein Bard" to "Burnstine and Lazinsky": Don't forget to check out our exhibit in the annex (hey, if you come to the concert, you can do both at once. We've gotten a very positive reaction to the current exhibit of photographs by Lyn Burnstine and Nancy Lazinsky. This display is one of our more limited engagements, only running until October (which will be here before you can say Jack Frost...uh, Robinson). So check out this wonderful exhibited by two very talented regional photographers.

And don't forget to vote. We are having a board election on Thursday, September 14 from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Please stop by to cast your vote.

Over the course of the last several months, we have established a great relationship with the folks at the Dutchess County Office of the Aging. They have run individual counseling sessions here, as well as holding workshops and lectures on the recent Medicare changes.

They will be returning to our library on September 16 at 1:00 PM to run a workshop on long term care insurance, and will fill us all in on how best to prepare for life's unexpected turns. This workshop will, of course, be informational only. The presenters are not affiliated with any one insurance company, so they will certainly be objective in their presentation. And will certainly do the fine job in disseminating necessary information that they always do.
