Board Election
Thursday, September 14
Although the library is not asking the electorate to cast a vote on our budget for 2007 (as we are not requesting an increase in the tax levy for the upcoming year), we do need to fill new vacancies on the board. We are asking all concerned members of the community to cast their ballot for candidates for the board of trustees. We have one declared candidate, Susan Mahan. Write-in candidates are also an option.
The polling place is the Hyde Park Free Library at 2 Main St. The election hours will be from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
Music In The Library
Bernstein Bard Trio!
We won't be beginning our actual "Living Room Concert" series until October 7 when well known singer-songwriter Cosy Sheridan will make her first appearance here. Mark your calendars for that event because Cosy has quite a following in the region and this concert will likely be a sell-out. You may even want to make your reservations now.
And more big musical news: we will also be running a separate series of regional acts each month. Our new River Songs series commences on Oct. 21 with acclaimed regional singer-songwriters Ken DeAngelis and Julie Ziavros.
But we don't have to wait til October for a special musical evening here at the Library Annex. Even though it's past Labor Day, it is still officially summer, so we're going to keep wearing white (or whatever other color we darn well feel like) and will keep our summer music series going through September.
The frost isn't on the pumpkin yet (and what with global warming and all, who knows when it will be?)
So our last special, ahem, extended summer concert will be with the New Paltz based Bernstein Bard Trio. We've been enjoying their diverse, (mostly) instrumental CD for the past several weeks and I am certain that this show is going to be a good'un.
The group consists of Steve Bernstien (mandolin), Mark Bernstein (guitar) and Robert Bard (bass). Their music has been described as "deep...rich...shimmering," with "the romance of tango, the lilt of mazurka, the elegance of swing, the many shades of waltz...a cool bossa nova, a fiery samba, the passion of the blues--this trio can swing, rock, bop and stop on a dime..."
It should be a great musical evening. General admission is $8.00. Seniors and students are asked to pay what they can.
"Second Look" Photo Exhibit Continues
Our current photography exhibit featuring the works of regional photographers Nancy Lazinsky and Lyn Burnstine continues through the month of September. Interestingly, both photographers began really focusing on photography as a means of expression after retirement. This impressive exhbit is indeed a reminder that we can all remain creative and productive throughout all stages of life. That's a powerful message indeed. But that would not count for much if the works themselves weren't so impressive. Both photographers bring a painterly eye to their work. Their styles are clearly different but thematically very complementary.
It's a really a must see. The exhibit can be visited during regular library hours and will, of course, be on display during special programming events such as our concerts.
Office of the Aging Presents Long Term Care Workshop
Over the past several months, we have been fortunate to provide a space for several programs and services offered by the Dutchess County Office of the Aging. They have run individual Medicare counseling, as well as offering workshops and lectures on the top.
We're pleased to announce that they will be once again offering a valuable workshop on a topic that should be of interest to all. On September 16 at 1:00 PM, representatives from the agency will be on hand to run a workshop on the topic of Long Term Care Insurance. This workshop will, of course, be informational only. The agency is not affiliated with any particular provider and can therefore offer objective information on what services and programs might be best for individuals.
Battle Of the Books
At Ketcham High School
On Saturday, September 16, our team of young adult readers will participate in the second annual Battle of the Books competition as Roy C. Ketcham Hight School from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM. We're very proud of our team. Last year, you may recall, we shared first place with the team from Staatsburg--which of course, speaks extremely well for the entire town. And this year's team has worked just as hard. We wish them much success in this regional competition.
Story Times Resume
Parents, our story times resume the week of September 25. On Mondays at 9:30, Mrs. B. will hold her Mother Goose hour for babies up to 26 months. And at 10;30, we'll once again have Toddler Time for those in that age group (recommended for age two). Tuesdays at 10:30, there will once again be a story hour for those in the pre-school age range.
Many Thanks For A Great Summer
With the beginning of the new academic year and with the autumnal equinox just around the corner, we look back with gratitude on what has been a very eventful and, we think, successful summer season. Our reading program was very successful with 75 students reading a total of 3,285 books. Mrs. B. in the children's room also ran numerous special programs, all of which were well attended and greeted with enthusiasm by participants. Our second annual library fair was held in August, and was a great success, with a wide array of activities and performances, all of which were both entertaining and educational. And lots of great food provided, this year, by the Amish Market.
We also held a live auction in August which was a very successful fundraiser for the library and a wonderful event overall. Our thanks go out to all the dedicated volunteers who worked at that event, as well as to the numerous sponsors. Chairperson Patsy Costello deserves special recognition, as does volunteer auctioneer Dom Navarra of Hyde Park Country Auctions.
It was indeed a great summer, and we look forward to an equally eventful--and enriching--fall.
