Teen Read Week(s):
This is National Teen Read Week, and since we at the Hyde Park Library love to one-up everybody else, we are actually turning the event into "Teen Read Weeks." Yes, this week and next, students aged 13-18 are encouraged to visit the Hyde Park Library and register for a drawing for a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble.
All you have to do is either sign up for a library card or show our staff a currently valid card. You don't even have to be a Hyde Park resident to participate, since we can issue cards (and honor existing cards) from anywhere within the area served by the Mid-Hudson Library System.
Just by signing up (or showing your current card), we'll enter your name into our drawing (to be held on Friday, October 27). And if you check out a book, CD, DVD or anything else (we'll throw in a second entry stub).
Quilt Raffle To Be Drawn 10/28/2006:
Our raffle drawing is once again drawing near. Our sales have been as brisk as the weather, but there is still time to purchase a ticket for this beautiful handmade quilt made by volunteers in our Craft Guild. Simply stop by the circulation desk in the library and pick up an individual ticket for $1.00 or a booklet of six tickets for $5.00.
Art Exhibit
We are once again hosting an exhibit featuring the works of Tatiana Rhinevault, one of Hyde Park's most talented painters. We are pleased to announce that--although the official run for this exhibit is the November-December timeframe--we actually will have the works up for view for the remaining weeks of October as well. We're delighted to be able to offer a sneak preview of the works before the official date.
Prints and Greeting Cards by Joyce Ghee Available
We were recently presented with a lovely, but limited set of prints of an original artwork by regional artist and author Joyce Ghee. This skillfully done work illustrates both the Main Library and our Annex.
Prints of this work are available for sale at the library's circulation desk. We also have a number of sets of greeting cards based on this print for sale in the library as well.
Upcoming Concerts:
On October 21 at 8:00 PM, we will be debuting a new concert series: River Songs. Our focus in this series will be on regional acts, and to kick it off we will be hosting Warwick based husband and wife duo Ken DeAngelis and Julie Ziavras. This talented duo has demonstrated command of a wide array of musical styles and genres. Julie is a classically trained singer who knows how to adapt her vocals to the demands of various genres. Her folk songs still sound folky--just beautifully sung. And she may even be coaxed into performing a sampling of one of her other specialties, native Greek folk songs. Husband Ken is a talented singer and composer whose work also straddles numerous styles handily. He is also a multi-instrumentalist of considerable ability.
And mark your calendars for November 4th, when we'll once again be hosting Hyde Park's own Eric Garrison in concert at the library. Eric has performed for us before and always brings the house down with his warm, witty compositions and engaging stage presence. Definitely one you do not want to miss.
And From the Children's Room
We're in full swing with our fall story times once again. "Mother Goose" meets at 9:30 on Mondays. Our "Toddler Time" hour is also on Mondays at 10:30. And our "Pre-school story hour" is held on Tuesdays at 10:30.
And we'll have special evening story hours and craft session periodically. These sessions are often geared for school aged students in the early grades. However, our Family Story Night will be held on October 24 at 6:30 PM is a special event for all ages. Storyteller Eileen Stelljes on hand to relate stories of "Spooky New York." Eileen is a gifted storyteller who has performed here several times in the past. We look forward to having her back here in the library.
And we look forward to seeing you at one or more of our many events
