HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER: BOOK AND STOCKING STUFFER SALE
December 9th promises to be an eventful day at the Hyde Park Library. Our Friends group will be holding a pre-holiday book sale that day and there should be stocking stuffers galore on hand. Of course, our Book Nook area is generally open and available to browsers almost any day, but on that date we will have multiple tables of books and audiovisual materials set up in the main room as well.
Also available will be art prints donated to the library by our friends at Hyde Park Paint and Glass, and a limited run of prints of an original artwork by Joyce Ghee. This remarkable work is an illustration of the library and annex buildings and has already garnered a good deal of favorable attention. Collectors and library supporters will almost certainly want a copy of their own.
We also have note cards on hand, which use Joyce's illustration as their design. These will also be available for purchase at the Book Sale on December 9th.
HOLIDAY CONCERT: LESLIE RITTER AND SCOTT PETITO
Also on December 9th at 8:00 PM, we will be hosting Woodstock based Woodstock NY area musicians Leslie Ritter & Scott Petito who have generously offered to do a benefit concert here at the library. Leslie and Scott have performed here before, and we are delighted to have them back with us--especially for the holiday season. We are suggesting a donation of about $10.00 for general admission, with seniors, students or anyone on a budget donating whatever they can. We will also be collecting for an area food bank at the event, so non-perishable food items will be gratefully received as well.
The concert is also a celebration of Leslie & Scott's first Holiday Music CD "This Christmas Morning," which was nationally released this holiday season and recently won two awards from the Just Plain Folks Music Organization. Their Christmas CD is a >> spirit- filled collection of original music and beautiful arrangements of traditional songs. They will be performing selections from their new recording at this show.
For more information and to hear sound samples please visit: www.leslieandscott.com. Leslie & Scott create music that is contemporary yet timeless, with a sound that is spacious and engaging. They have performed and recorded with many top artists, including James Taylor and the Band. They are a dynamic musical duo who specialize in combining beautifully haunting vocals with soundscapes of grandeur and polish.
SONG CIRCLE TO MEET DECEMBER
Area singers and musicians are invited to partake in our new monthly series of "Song Circles" in the library annex. We ran our first one in November, and it was a great success with performers from all over the area participating and sharing their own compositions or their versions of folk and contemporary classics.
The event is very informal, and all are welcome to attend. (Come and be part of the audience even if you're not a performer in your own right. Or contribute a poem or story of your own. Who knows? Maybe one of the songwriters will want to help you turn it into something musical.)
The next song circle will be held on Sunday, December 17th at 2:00 PM (we suggest you arrive a bit earlier for set-up). It's a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and a good place to test your wings.
UPCOMING EVENTS: TOM KIMMEL
The regular concert series will resume in January with a rare area appearance by singer-songwriter Tom Kimmel. Tom has penned songs that were ultimately recorded by such prominent acts as Johnny Cash, Joe Cocker, Linda Ronstadt and Shawn Colvin. His music has been featured in films and television as well (including such cinematic releases as Twins, and Runaway Bride and television series like Miami Vice and Touched by an Angel). He has toured extensively and has released seven albums of his own. Tom will be performing here on January 6 at 8:00 PM.
MEDICARE COUNSELING:
The Dutchess County Office of the Aging will once again be holding counseling sessions on Medicare issues here at the library in December. Those interested in making an appointment to see a counselor should call the DCOA directly at 845-486-2566.
ART EXHIBIT CONTINUES
Our current exhibition featuring the works of prominent local artist Tatiana Rhinevault continues through the month of December. Tatiana is also our next-door neighbor, and her outdoor display of her remarkable work has made her own home something of a local landmark. We like to think of the current exhibit as actually overflowing onto the property next door. However you view it, Main St. in Hyde Park has become something of an art center.
Our January exhibit will feature the work of another Hyde Park resident--local photographer Andy Kilpatrick.
A TIP OF THE HAT TO VISUAL ENVIRONMENT
Speaking of visual treats, we owe a debt of thanks to volunteers Anita Whalen and Jackie Troisi who dedicated their time and talents to giving the library a most seasonal look. As members of the Visual Environment Committee, Jackie and Anita have done a great deal of great work in and around the library. We appreciate their support.
