Upcoming Events At Hyde Park Free Library

Spring has sprung (well, actually, it seems like the seasons are still duking it out, but we know spring will ultimately prevail).

We're celebrating at the library with lots of exhibits and events planned for April and May.

If you haven't had a chance to stop by and take in our current art exhibit, featuring the works of the late Hyde Park painter and author, Vivian Gaines Tanner Paxton, I hope you can find the time sometime within the next month to pay us a visit. Her works are truly remarkable, almost mystical in their effect. The exhibit is available to be viewed during normal library hours, and of course, during special events.

One upcoming special event--one that is truly special--will be our concert on April 7 at 8:00 PM featuring guitarist extraordinaire, Brooks Williams. I'll be sending out press release on Brooks under separate cover (or rather, in a separate note), note, since it expresses the breadth of his talent more than I ever could. But I do hope you'll consider catching this particular show. It is not every day that one gets to hear the work of a truly brilliant instrumentalist.

The music never stops at the Hyde Park Library. On April 21, we will be hosting a concert starring our very own Kathy Moran. I say "our very own" because Kathy is one of the organizers (along with Eric Garrison and myself) of the concert series. She's usually the smiling face you see at the door. But what you may not know is that Kathy is an accomplished songwriter and performer in her own right. She'll be on the opposite end of the room on the 20th, and will be joined by her band.

And that's not all. As a special treat, we will be hosting a "select chorus" from the Rhinebeck Choral Club as an opening act for Kathy and Friends. The group--which is near and dear to my heart (and lungs)--will be performing selections from its upcoming spring concert in May. The evening will offer quite a diversity of musical styles and should be a great time for all.

April is National Poetry Month--and National Library Week traditionally falls in April as well. To celebrate both events, we will be hosting a number of library and literature themed events this month. On April 19 at 7:30, we will be hosting a poetry reading with several poets from Marist College presenting their works. Among the confirmed readers will be a good friend of the Hyde Park Library, Bob Vivona.

Along with her regularly scheduled story times on Monday and Tuesday, Mrs. B. will also be hosting a special event for children in April. On the 17th at 6:30 PM, she will be hosting another session of her "Family Story Night" series. This month's theme, appropriately enough, will be "Take Me Out--To The Library."

Our new Teen Book Club is also scheduled to meet that same week. Their scheduled meeting is on April 19 at 6:30 PM. Our Adult Level club will be discussing Barbara Ehrenreich's "Nickel and Dimed" on Monday, April 16 at 7:00 PM and again on Friday April 20th at Noon. Mystery lovers are welcome to join us on April 13 at 12:00 noon for a discussion of Raymond Chandler's "The Long Goodbye."

Our Friends of the Hyde Park Library Group will also be celebrating the Library Month by holding a book sale in the Library Annex on April 15 from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. We have a good deal of inventory, so prices will be especially reasonable this time out. Stop by and take advantage of some great bargains.
