Upcoming Events At Hyde Park Free Library

`Poetry From Guantanamo: The library will be hosting a reading of poetry written by prisoners interned at the Guantanamo facility on May 1 at 7:00. Readers will be members of the Dutchess Peace Coalition. This program will be followed by a poetry open mic at 7:45. Poets from the area are invited to participate. For more information call the library at 229-7791 ext. 205.

Eric Garrison In Concert: Hyde Park's own Eric Garrison will end our "Living Room Concert Series" on May 10th at 8:00 PM. Eric has performed here at the library on several previous occasions, and his warm, wry and witty songs are always a treat. As the organizer of the series, he has been responsible for bringing an array of talented, nationally recognized artists here to Hyde Park. As a performer and recording artist in his own right, he has garnered critical and popular acclaim over the past three decades.

As in previous years, the end of this concert series does not mean the end of music at the library. We will be hosting various regional artists throughout the summer. Keep your eyes peeled--and continue to check this column periodically.

Film Series Continues: Our "Book To Film" series continues in May with a May 9th screening of "The Kite Runner." The film will be shown at 7:30 with a brief discussion thereafter.

A bit later in the month (May 23rd), we will screen the 1974 film version of the "The Great Gatsby," featuring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. All films are free and open to the public. While the discussions revolve around any differences between the book and the film, knowledge of the book is not at all mandatory.

Japanese Children's Day: On Saturday, May 17th, the library will be hosting members of the regional Japanese Association in a celebration of "Japanese Children's Day." This is a wonderful opportunity for children of Japanese descent--and everyone else! --To learn about Japanese culture and traditions.

Defensive Driving Course: Our friends at Digital Defensive Driving will be running another "Defensive Driving and Point Reduction" course on May 24th from 10:00 to 4:00. It is suggested that participants bring a bag lunch. To register for the program, call Triangle Insurance at 452-2331 or online, visit www.digitaldefensivedriving.com.

Book Club News: Our mystery selectionİfor May is "Tuesday The Rabbi Saw Red." Discussion will be on May 9th at 12:00 PM.

On May 19th at 7:00 PM and on May 23rd at 12:00 noon, we will be holding discussions of our general interest selection for May, "The Dive From Clausen's Pier" by Ann Packard.
