Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher Returns:
As noted in an earlier column, we'll be bringing back classical guitarist Peter Fletcher too the Library Annex on March 29th at 8:00 P.M. Peter has played here several times before, and his classical concerts are always a delight. When Peter is in this neck of the woods, it often means that he has a major performance lined up in the Metropolitan area as well. And that is indeed the case this time out. Peter will be performing in Carnegie Hall just three days after his performance here.
Peter--who has studied under Pepe Romero and Jose Tomas and performed in a master class under Christopher Parkening--will be performing a varied program, featuring works by Bach, Handel, Weiss, Reusner, Koshkin, Mompou, Lauro, and Albeniz.
Admission is a suggested donation of $10.00 with all proceeds going to the artist.
Song Circle This Sunday:
Speaking of musical events, local musicians, singers, and storytellers are invited to participate in this month's "Song Circle" at 1:00 PM, Sunday, March 30 in the Library Annex. This impromptu session will offer area musicians a chance to try out material in a supportive, informal setting. And if you just want to listen, well, that's fine too.
Poetry Night:
April is National Poetry Month, and we're going to ring in the "sonnet season" with a poetry reading featuring poets from the Marist College Faculty. Among those reading will be Judith Saunders, Raphael Kosek and Lea Graham. Also reading will be Bob Vivona, whose help in organizing this event has been invaluable. The event will be held on April 1 (no foolin') at 7:00 PM. The reading is offered in co-operation with the Marist Summer Writing Institute.
Book-To-Film Series:
Our new "Book To Film Series" has generated considerable interest, we're glad to report. We do want to note a schedule change, however. Nicolas Roeg's "Don't Look Now," originally scheduled for this coming weekend has been rescheduled for Friday, April 4 at 7:30 and Sunday, April 6 at 2:00 PM. Films in the series are free and open to the public. A discussion of the film and the source novella by Daphne DuMaurier will follow the screenings. A second April selection in the series will be "Memoir of A Geisha," which will show on April 18 at 7:30 and April 20th at 2:00.
Brooks Williams In Concert:
Our "Living Room Concert" folk series resumes this month with an encore performance by Brooks Williams on April 12 at 8:00 PM. If you caught Brooks in concert here last year, you know that he is a masterful guitarist, and a gifted songwriter and engaging performer. General admission is $10.00. Senior rate is $6.00.
Brooks will also be facilitating a workshop for guitarists (recommended for intermediate and above) on the afternoon of the 18th. Entitled "Adventuresome Guitar," is geared especially to help those who feel their "guitar skills have reached a plateau" and everything they play is starting to sound a bit "same-y." This workshop will focus on tools to help participants understand the fretboard beyond the first four frets, with special emphasis on chords (specifically triads, barre chords, and power chords) and a look at bass runs and riffs, as a way to infuse guitar sounds with melody and harmony. There will be a lot of playing in this workshop, so come prepared to pick. Workshop fee is $45.00, which includes admission to the evening concert.
Art Exhibit:
Our current display featuring abstract works by local artist William Joel has been extended through April 15th.
