Hyde Park Library Festival: Our Summer Festival has become quite the traditional family event over the past several years, and we're pleased to announce that this year's event will take place on August 9th, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Join us for a full day of family fun at the Hyde Park Library. There'll be crafts and games, an all-day book sale, inexpensive refreshments and a special Kamishibai Story Telling Event. We'll be featuring special appearances by Kevin and Carol Becker with Rich Keyes, Tales'n'Tunes, Bee Bee The Clown, CityWinds Trio and Daniel the Magician. For more information, call 229-7791.
Dana and Susan Robinson Sunday Concert: The festival spirit will continue into Sunday when we present the internationally acclaimed folk duo, Dana and Susan Robinson in concert on Sunday, August 10 at 1:00 PM. Dana and Susan have played in Hyde Park previously in the Fiddler's Green series and won many a new fan at the time. This talented husband and wife duo has been described as "heirs to the tradition of Woody Guthrie" and have been hailed as "consummate multi-instrumentalists (guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin) integrating styles from the Appalachian, Celtic, and African traditions to create a fresh and contemporary sound that is uniquely their own."
This is a "donations welcome" concert, with no fixed admission and with any proceeds going toward the funding of future musical and/or cultural programs.
Barnes and Noble Bookfair: We are working with the folks at Barnes and Noble in Poughkeepsie to hold a "bookfair" at their site on August 15th and 16th. We will have vouchers available here at the library that can be presented at that store (or any other Barnes and Noble store for that matter) which when used will allow for 10% of the purchase to be donated to our institution.
We will be holding a number of events at the B&N site on that weekend. We will have children's events, book discussion group meetings and at this writing are planning on a number of musical events as well. The store will also be offering tours for children, teens and adults designed to give participants insight into the inner workings of a large bookstore enterprise. We will be listing an exact calendar of events a week or so in advance.
Summer Fun Film Festival: We'll be running a free summer themed film festival on Friday evenings throughout the month of August. Our first entry will be "The Summer of '42," which will be screened on August 8 at 7:15 PM. Future entries in the series will include: "In the Good Old Summertime" with Judy Garland and Van Heflin on August 15th; the surfing classic "The Endless Summer" on August 22; and the Disney favorite "Summer Magic" on August 29th.
Bud Buckley In Concert: Former Hyde Park resident, Bud Buckley, will be performing here on August 23rd. We're very much looking forward to hosting Bud, who was formerly a teacher here in the Hyde Park School District and, since his retirement, is now devoting most of his energies to his music. Opening act will be Janette Marie.
Defensive Driving Class: We will once again be hosting an evening defensive driving and point reduction course on August 13th and 14th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Attendance at both sessions is mandatory. Please call 845-774-4465 to register.
Art Exhibit: Our plein-air exhibit featuring the work of artist Judy Reynolds continues throughout the month of August. This exhibit has garnered considerable attention in its brief stay here so far. It's definitely one to catch.
Quilt Raffle '08: And speaking of beautiful work on exhibit, our quilting group The Hyde Park Library Craft Guild has completed their most recent effort "Hearts and Roses," and it is certainly a remarkable effort. Raffle tickets for this beautiful, hand-crafted quilt will be on sale for the next two months both here at the library and at various special sites throughout the next two months. Tickets are a dollar apiece or a booklet of six for $5.00. Drawing is scheduled for October 25th.
Children's Room News: We have had quite a busy summer so far and still have one more week to go in our annual summer reading program. We've enjoyed a great variety of special activities, mostly related to our "Catch the Reading Bug" theme. Students who have been keeping reading logs are also invited to our annual ice cream social to be held on August 26th at 6:45 PM.
For children just beginning school in the fall, we will be hosting our annual late August Kindergarten Day on August 25th. Focus will be on stories and crafts related to school life. It's a fine way to help youngsters make this important transition.
