Quilt Raffle: October is indeed a busy month at the Library. Our annual quilt raffle drawing is set for October 25th . Our quilting group has established this event as something of an annual tradition, and justly so. Our library quilters spend close to six months of each year to create uniquely designed, hand crafted quilts, that frankly, seem to get better every year.

Tickets are available at the library circulation desk and at special events in town throughout the month and cost $1.00 per ticket or $5.00 for a book of six.

As has been the case every year, the quilt is currently on display in the main building of the library from now until the drawing on the 25th. The drawing will be part of a larger "Volunteer Recognition Event" to which the entire community is invited and which will run from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM (with the raffle drawing to take place at 5:00). Please consider stopping by and celebrating the achievements of our library's many volunteers.

Also scheduled to be on hand for this event is Senator Stephen Saland, whose support for the region's libraries has once again been shown this year in the form of substantial grants for technology upgrades and capital improvements.

Exhibit and Artist's Reception: Matthew Slaats, who along with Madeleine Segall-Marx was the recipient of a Dutchess County Arts Council grant and whose sponsoring agency was the Hyde Park Library will be October's artist in the Annex.

This exhibition should be of particular interest to the community, as its theme is "Images of Hyde Park." For the past year, Matthew has been busily meeting with historically minded local residents, assembling images and film footage of Hyde Park throughout its history. The images that will be on display in the library will be but a fraction of what will ultimately inform the project.

The artist's ultimate aim for the project is multimedia showing of the assembled images and clips on a large screen, perhaps even that of the Hyde Park Drive In.

Matthew will be making a brief presentation on the project at the reception he will be holding here at the library on Sunday, October 12th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

Scott Ainslie In Concert: Blues and acoustic singer-songwriter Scott Ainslie will appear in concert here at the Library Annex on October 25th at 8:00 PM. Scott has produced four CDs and a teaching DVD over the course of a career spanning four decades. He also authored a book "Robert Johnson/At the Crossroads" on the legendary blues master. General admission to the concert is $12.00. Senior rate is $6.00.

Guitarists should take note, Scott will be offering a workshop on blues and slide guitar on the afternoon of the concert. This should be a unique opportunity for guitarists of all levels to become better acquainted with the techniques of the blues guitar...as taught by a master.

New Film Series Begins: Our new film series "Friendship On Film" will explore how the the theme of friendship has been portrayed in the American cinema. Our debut film will be John Sayles 1992 film "Passion Fish" which features an Oscar nominated performance by Mary McDonnell with able support by Emmy winner Alfre Woodard and Mid-Hudson Valley based Oscar nominee David Strathairn. Screening will be on October 24th at 7:15 PM. Admission is free. The film series is made possible through the support of an Ann and Abe Effron Donor Advised Fund Grant.

Halloween Concert and Film: Kevin and Carol Becker, who have delighted family audiences here at the library with Holiday themed concerts, will be here on October 30th at 6:30 PM with a program of Halloween related stories and songs. We call it "Hoot and Howl," and it promises to be a wonderful "Halloween Eve's" entertainment.

And on Halloween night, we will be screening the eerie 1947 masterpiece "The Uninvited." We will be running this film just a bit later than some of our other film showings--namely at 7:45. We'd like to make sure that everyone has time to finish their trick or treating trekking.
