Upcoming Events At Hyde Park Free Library
 

Art Exhibition “The Singing Bowl: Tales from the Enemy”: For the month of November, works from the ongoing project by artist Madeleine Segall-Marx. lived in areas of armed conflict. Segall-Marx has collected stories of people around the world, written for this project, with each story generating a 2- or 3-dimensional artwork. The exhibit is funded in part by a grant from the Dutchess County Arts Council.

We will be holding a reception will be held for Ms Segall-Marx at the Library Annex on November 16 from 2:00 to 4:30 PM. The reception will feature a reading by the artist from the collected the stories linked to her project. The Iranian film “Dreams of Sparrows ” – whose director H.M. Daffar has contributed a personal contributed a story to the project--will also be screened at 2:45. This acclaimed film is the first documentary to emerge from Iraq since the conflict began in 2003.

Fundraising Concert: Hyde Park’s own Nothiní Fancy band will be performing in concert at the Hyde Park Library Annex on November 15th. Guest vocalists Jackie Brill and Greg Callahan (hmm, thereís a familiar name) will join guitarists John Allers and Tom Gander, percussionist Andrew Brill and vocalist/harmonica player Steve Cherry for an evening of eclectic entertainment. Suggested minimum donation is $10.00. Starting time is 8:00 PM.

Living Room Concert Series: Alastair Moock. Weíre delighted to present singer-songwriter Alastair Moock in concert on November 27 at 8:00 PM. This talented young artist has been compared to John Prine and Woody Guthrie. Alastair mixes his own songs with spoken word pieces, stories from the road and even a bit of American history, all providing a context for the traditional blues and ballads he specializes in.

General admission is $12.00.

Alastair will also be conducting a songwriting workshop at 1:00 on the afternoon of the show. The focus will be on how the influence of past masters of the folk and blues genres can be integrated into oneís own songwriting. Workshop fee is $45.00, which also includes admission to the evening concert for those participants who wish to attend the evening event.

Friendship on Film Series: Our new film series, focusing on the theme of friendship, will have two entries in the month of November. The Bette Midler/Barbara Hershey classic “Beaches” will be screened at 7:15 on Friday, November 14. And on the following Friday (November 21 – not to slight the men – we will be showing the equally classic male bonding film “Brian’s Song”) also at 7:15. A brief discussion of the films will follow their screenings.

Picturing America Displays and Events: Like many libraries and schools throughout the nation, the Hyde Park Library has been the recipient of a collection an extensive set of posters of classic American works of art and photographs. This collection will be on display in various configurations and in various thematic groupings throughout the year. On Thursday evening, November 20th at 7:00 PM, we will be hosting a workshop, “Picturing America: Resources For Schools and Libraries,” which will address how schools, libraries and the general public can best make use of this collection of American masterpieces. This event is co-sponsored by the Mid-Hudson Teacher Center.

Defensive Driving Class To Be Held: The library will host a six hour course on defensive driving on November 15th from 10:00 AM. The library will not be registering participants directly. To register, please go to www.digitaldefensivedriving.com, or, since walk-ins will be welcome, please feel free to simply come to the Library Annex ten minutes prior to class time.

Long Term Care Workshop Offered: Representatives from the Dutchess County Office for the Aging will be on hand in the Library Annex on Wednesday, November 19th at 6:00 PM to address the important issue of Long Term Care. Attendees will come to understand their options, without having to face a sales pitch. This workshop is aimed at people between the ages 45-70 who wish to plan for future long term health care needs.
