Upcoming Events At Hyde Park Free Library

January will be a busy month at the Hyde Park Library. We'll be kicking of f the new year by resuming our concert programming and with a new film, and a few other events along the way.

Pierce Pettis In Concert: This coming Saturday, we'll be hosting highly acclaimed singer-songwriter Pierce Pettis. He has released eight albums to date, with a new CD scheduled for early this year. His songs have been recorded by artists such as Garth Brooks, Kim and Reggie Harris, and Magpie. He's done stints as staff songwriter in studios in Muscle Shoals and Nashville, and is the winner of numerous songwriter awards in both the folk and country genres.

"Performing Songwriter" magazine has called Pierce "one of the more vital and critically acclaimed folk stars of recent years," "Sing Out" maintains that he "doesn't write mere songs: he writes literature...End to end the songwriting is brilliant." Reviewers on epinions.com have written, "Don't miss a Pierce Pettis concert...he is a skilled performer with songs that are profound and beautifully delivered."

Check out Pierce's website at www.piercepettis.com.

The concert will be at 8:00 PM on Saturday, January 10 in the Library Annex. General admission is $12.00.

Pierce will be offering a songwriters workshop earlier in the day (at 1:00 PM). For more information on either event (or both) or to make a reservation (strongly recommended), please contact us at (845) 229-7791.

"Auteurs du Cinema" Series Debuts: We will also be running a new film series in January, beginning on Friday, January 9 at 7:15 PM. This series will focus on filmmakers with their own personal and unique vision ("auteurs" as they are frequently referred to in criticism--and by film snobs like me). In January we will focus on the Coen Brothers. We will be screening their first film "Blood Simple" this coming Friday.

On Sunday, January 11, we will be screening their celebrated and award winning "Fargo" at 2:00 PM.

Both showings will be in the Library Annex and are free and open to the public.

Upcoming entries in the series will feature the Coens' "Big Lebowski" on January 16 (at 7:15) and "No Country For Old Men" on Januray 30th at 2:00 PM.

Keeping Your New Year's Resolution with Self-Hypnosis: On Tuesday, January 20 at 7:00 PM , we will be hosting hypnotist and counselor Susan Olin-Dambrowski who will facilitate a presentation on how to use self-hypnosis to maintain one's New Year's resolutions and to meet general self-improvement goals. Susan has offers presentations here before and was quite effective. Reservations are recommended for this event.

Library Friends Group To Meet: Speaking of New Year's resolutions, if you've always meant to find creative ways of helping the library out and promoting our services, you may want to consider joining our Friends of the Hyde Park Library group. They will be holding their monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 13th at 7:00 PM. They are an active and creative group--and most welcoming of new members.

News From the Children's Room: We will be closed on Monday, January 19th in observance of Martin Luther King day. But story hours resume January 20th (after a brief holiday recess). Also on the docket for all moppets, is a craft and activity session centered on themes related to the upcoming film "Deseraux," scheduled for Friday, January 23rd at 4:00 PM. Registration is recommended.

Artist's Reception: Our current exhibition in the Library Annex features the work of Hyde Park artist Tatiana Rhinevault. The theme is "Along the Hudson," and several works depict recognizable landmarks in our the region, as seen from the artist's own unique perspective. An artist's reception will be held on Tuesday, January 27 at 6:00 PM. The exhibit will continue through February.

Note: Almost any winter event is subject to weather related delays or cancelations. Should there be any question about any scheduled happening at the library, please call us at 229-7791 ext. 200. This is also the best number to make a reservation for any event for which one is recommended. In the event of a weather related delay or cancelation, we will also contact regional radio stations, who are normally quite good about posting the details.

Happy New Year To All Our Patrons!
