Veteran's Day Eve Program

Childe Hassam, Allies Day, May 1917, 1917 from the Picturing America Collection was used as a visual reminded of "Flying the Flag".

January 30, 2009 - Submitted grant proposal for the We The People Bookshelf
"Picturing America" Grant.
March 7, 2009 - Presentation at the NYSCATE Hudson Valley Regional Conference. In attendance were 294 educators. A display table had Picturing America Program materials along with some Picturing America Posters. The Presentation given by Richard Taylan was entitled "Picturing America Resources and Oral Histories" and was attended by 24 educators. Demonstrated were the online Resources and dealt with creating "Oral History Projects or Presentations with student and other teachers. Online Resource included the Picturing America Program, digital cameras and iPhoto software.

September 26, 2009 - The Hyde Park Free Library is listed in the community program Cross Roads of History, September 26, 2009, in celebration of the Quadricentennial event. Richard Taylan volunteered to present at a booth about Henry Hudson and the Half Moon, created by Sue Delorenzo, Event Chairperson. The "Half Moon" ship, that was created by Linda and Richard Taylan, which ventured down Route 9 in the 4th of July parade and appeared in front of the Annex on the Summer Festival, August 8th and the World of 1609 presentation on September 13th, made its final appearance again in front of the Annex on Hyde Park Cross Roads of History Day,
September 26th. The "Half Moon" was decked out, in the Dutch tradition, flying the flags of 1609.
A special thank you to Board members, Friends of the HPFL, Staff, and Patrons who attended the World of 1609 and Beyond ... Picturing America Presentation on September 13, 2009.
Also, a special thank you the Janet Battistoni, and her children's book club that created a 9 foot mural depicting event told in the "Owl's Journey" by Maura D. Shaw, in celebration of the Quadricentennial event.

A special Veteran's Day program was held November 10, 2009 at 7:00 PM, Honoring Veterans - Helen Myers World War II Manuscript Sampler.
This program featured a DVD with Carney Rhinevault, Hyde Park Town Historian. This sampler included some of the stories included in Helen Myers World War II Manuscript about veterans who served in World War II and life in hometown Hyde Park during World War II.
The DVD in High-Definition, was created by Richard Taylan, Trustee of Hyde Park Free Library, as part of programming related to two grants he received for the library from the:

November 11, 2009 - On Veterans Day, Benedict McCafree,
Senior staff member for Congressman, Scott Murphy, presented an American flag, that has flown over the U.S. Capitol,
to the Hyde Park Free Library in honor of local veterans' service. This display is located near the Norman Rockwell, Freedom of Speech poster and the Childe Hassam, Allies Day, May 1917 poster. This new flag will be displayed in the library on December 7, 2009.

October 29, 2009 - Beth Kolp - Community Read with Quadricentennial Theme This program included the We The People Book Shelf book: Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving along with the Rip Van Winkle also by Washington Irving. Also highlighted was the Picturing America Thomas Cole, "The Oxbow" 1836 poster and Hudson River School of painters.
A Rip Van Winkle scarecrow was created and displayed at a contest at the Farmer's Market has been on display in the library to help promote the Community Read event.

January 30, 2010 - Submitted grant proposal for the We The People Bookshelf "A More Perfect Union" Grant. Many of the posters, like Alexander Gardner's, "Abraham Lincoln" and related images will be used in this new grant endeavor.
