Compiled by Richard Taylan
Adjunct Geology Instructor, Marist College

With the recent discovery of mastodon bones in Hyde Park, there has been a great interest in the community for information dealing with mastodons and mammoths, glaciers and the ice age.

The Hyde Park Free Library is planning a presentation for the community. Children will be invited to study books dealing with these subjects. More information will follow in the coming weeks. The Haviland Middle School Library will also be involved in this endeavor.

On September 23, 1999, Cathy Lozier, came to the Haviland Middle School Library along with the recently discovered mastodon bones. A series of presentations were given to students and staff members about the discovery of these bones. Students were given a first hand experience of seeing these bones and learning about mastodons.

The picture below is was taken during one of the presentations given that day.
