The Hyde Park Mastodon

The Loziers will share their recollections of the events of the discovery of the Hyde Park Mastodon fossil remains in their backyard. The cataloging and removal of this unique specimen were accomplished with the assistance of many reseachers from the Paleonotological Research Institution, Ithaca, New York, as well as many community volunteers.

  Mastodon excavation site

On September 16, 2000, paleontologists and their assistants work to catalog and remove mastodon bones from the Loziers backyard pond at their Hyde Park home. The bones were later dated to be about 11,480 years old.
